WordPress website designs and more:
“I am very impressed with Bruce Rawles’s ability to help me transform our website from the dinosaur age into the 21st century. Bruce was able to combine a variety of features from the main university website and other department/school websites to create a site for the English Department that vastly increases our functionality and improves visitors’ perception of who we are. He blended many features together to craft an elegant, intuitive, easy-to-maintain WordPress site that matches the campus ‘look and feel’ while providing a unique persona in keeping with the needs of faculty, students, and alumni. Bruce researched, identified and implemented plugins ideally suited to our site, did significant CSS customization, optimized the architecture, and provided ongoing training (including custom screen flow video) to ensure that the site will be simple and straightforward to keep up to date. This new responsive design looks great on large monitors, tablets and smart phones. It is easy to navigate and gives viewers a lively experience when they visit. Bruce was also a pleasure to work with. We brainstormed how to achieve our objectives together. His ‘can do’ helpful attitude and quick response were invaluable at each step of the overhaul process, which went very smoothly from concept to when the site went live on July 18, 2014. I could not have achieved our final outcome without his help. I would recommend Bruce’s expertise to anyone needing a customized WordPress website that will serve well for the long haul.”
– Kim Elzinga, University of Colorado, Boulder – English Department Marketing
Client: University of Colorado, Boulder – English Department: The Marketing staff at CU Boulder English Dept. had an existing WordPress site that needed a major upgrade. The site required custom sidebar navigation for each section, extensive styling (a generic StudioPress Genesis theme was used as the starting point for its foundation), custom categories (taxonomies) that allowed for category pages for both faculty specialties and specific academic interests (course categories), as well as a versatile calendar/events system showing both upcoming and past events in list, summary and detail page formats. The site needed to be compatible with the overall styling of the main Boulder campus site, and also pull elements and architectural ideas from the Music Department site, such as the out of focus background photo of books, analogous to the music site’s piano keyboard.
Client: Valuetec Financial Equipment, LLC: This project involved quickly taking an unfinished ‘broken’ site, pulling the elements from the live site to be re-purposed and upgrading to a professional Genesis StudioPress responsive theme, performing image cleanup in PhotoShop, adding new images and writing copy, reorganizing the architecture, and streamlining the design to keep the client’s corporate identity intact, while providing a clean, visually appealing presentation that is easy to navigate and also features their key products and services in a responsive slider. This fast design project also was completed with tight budgetary constraints.
Client: Camden Learning Center: Another quick ‘makeover’ project using a responsive “mobile-first” Genesis Theme by StudioPress for an educational website; existing text content and imagery (requiring minimal editing) made this project a super-fast upgrade with a simple, clean design that now looks great on screens of any size including desktop machines, tablets (e.g. iPad), and smart phones (e.g. iPhone). The addition of a blog page and the intuitive WordPress interface provides easy client updates.
Client: SkyView Academy: The Big Event: The goal for this fast-turnaround, all-new, mobile-responsive, Genesis-theme-based design was to incorporate an “80’s look” with graphics and colors to match the poster illustration on the home page – and clearly document the styling in the CSS code so that when the site for this annual event changes themes, it will be simple and straightforward to change content area backgrounds and imagery, colors, fonts, etc. – for next years event – and beyond. This was a pro bono project for a family member and a worthy fund-raising cause for an educational institution.
Client: d-7 Roofing – One of the largest roofing companies in Denver, Colorado needed a comprehensive update to their primary website (with a constellation of related support satellite sites geared toward specific business-to-business markets) with professional styling, B2B emphasis and significant content and design research. A StudioPress Genesis theme was highly customized with an innovative site-wide navigation scheme using the SlideDeck WordPress plugin, which was also used for self-running galleries on selected pages. The site also incorporates custom branded video, audio voice-over editing, expandable paragraph content, extensive on-site roof photography and videography, many SEO and marketing best-practices and much more.
Client: CFAPA.org: This client wanted a super-fast, no frills, simple site with a rock-solid foundation and lots of room for growth, which the Genesis theme and framework provides.
Client: ForaysInForgiveness.com – This blogging client in Denver, Colorado needed a major website upgrade to her neglected site foundation and infrastructure, with a professionally-designed WordPress theme and numerous social media and marketing enhancements (including mailing list consolidation and import to a MailChimp RSS-to-email campaign to keep things simple for the client), requiring updated plugins as well as considerable attention to detail in refining post formatting and page structural rework. Facebook and Twitter graphics were updated to use a portion of the author’s book photo for thematic consistency between the blog and her social networking presence. This web re-design project was an excellent fit for yet another BlueHost hosting solution and StudioPress theme on the Genesis Design Framework (News).
“I think the site is looking fabulous. Thanks so much for all your great work!”
– Susan Dugan, blogger and author
Client: Lyn Corona – This Denver, Colorado blogger and educator required significant website makeovers (including consolidation of hosting and registration) for a pair of out-of-date websites; one (Becoming Learners Together) originally made with WordPress, another (School of Reason) with HomeStead. These cross-linked ‘sister websites’ (one for an established educational organization, the other for a related personal blog) were intended to have similar thematic elements. Both sites use professionally styled and customized StudioPress (Lifestyle) themes, plus a variety of social media and marketing enhancements, plugins, widgets, integrated and thematically consistent MailChimp (RSS-to-email) subscriber feeds (with email list imports from aWeber), and substantial design cleanup on individual pages. Additional domains are now forwarded to the main sites. These web re-design projects were – as always – a great fit for a BlueHost hosting and registration solution.
“Thank you for all your wonderful work on behalf of School of Reason and Becoming Learners Together – and for all your kind patience and support.” – Lyn Corona, Denver, Colorado
|Updated: New site design using the StudioPress
Theme: Enterprise. (designer – Nancy)
|Prior Site – Designed over 4 years ago, it was
becoming cluttered due to the limitations of this older
and outdated pre-Genesis theme.
Client: PremierHealthCarePlacerville.com – StudioPress theme, WordPress architecture for a progressive chiropractic clinic in northern California. Using best practices for SEO, Premier Healthcare home page ranks number one in Go0ogle searches. Nancy
Client: Miracle Promotions – This site upgrade to WordPress/StudioPress also involved a mobile-friendly design as much as possible, using the StudioPress Genesis eleven40 theme. Through extensive email/phone/Skype communications, existing photography, text, image-maps and other content were enhanced, updated and flowed into a new design for better usability, search engine performance, social networking integration (e.g. AddThis footer icons and recent tweets in the home page sidebar) and more. Personalized training and custom CSS styling allows the client to do much of the routine posting and updates herself.
Client: Mirror Finish Auto Detailing near Manchester, UK, needed a total update to his website. A focus on the beautiful mirror finish on the auto detailed was an important part of this site, thus a gallery was created. Each new finished auto is a post that feeds into his RSS feed so that if one signs up for his updates, they will see each and every post. (We recommend this for most sites.)
Our client moved from the UK to Texas in 2013, so Nancy created the same site on a .com and updated it to reflect the correct lingo as needed. Videos will be forthcoming, so both sites are a work in progress. It just grows and gets better all the time (a real plus with the ease of use that the WordPress CMS offers!)
The client would like to be more hands on with adding his images, so when Mirror Finish needs training and maintenance, we will mentor him to update his site via Skype or g+h (Google+ hangouts) with screen-sharing.
Nancy enjoys being involved in the site design, color, layout and functionality of each new clients site. This one was really fun – having a new set of needs to fulfill for the client and working with all the photos to get them just right for presentation – which included redesigning the original logo, social icons that are trucks and a red car favicon (shown on the tab example below.)
Every detail is important!
One more site created, that shows how varied our customer base is and how fantastically StudioPress themes can be customized to work for just about any kind of web site or blog.
|Nancy Redesigned CMEA site using a StudioPress template.||Original Copper Mesa Educational Alliance site.|
Client: Copper Mesa Elementary School’s PTO Alliance in Highlands Ranch, CO needed a site face lift that would include the school colors of green and gold. The old site did not have the capabilities for immediate updates and was not user-friendly. This site should help immensely in the communication efforts between PTO and parents. [Note: This particular web site was a labor of love and a volunteer effort on Nancy’s part because our grandchildren attend Copper Mesa Elementary and our daughter is the President of the PTO! In 2014, after Nancy’s daughter was no longer as active in the PTO, a new webmaster volunteered to maintain the site. During the time Nancy maintained the site, the fund raising efforts and community involvement for the PTO were quite successful.]
Client: Herman’s Maintenance and Landscaping – required a quick site (completed within a 48 hour turnaround) to represent his landscaping business on the web. This is easy to expand as needed.
Client: Premier Healthcare in Placerville, CA requested additional sites featuring primarily Personal Injury Health Care Services.
Client: Premier Healthcare in Placerville, CA requested additional sites featuring primarily Auto Accident/Personal Injury Health Care Treatment.
Client: LivingVisionLLC.com – Our client needed a versatile, elegant, professional CMS-based design optimized for her staging, property and site management business. The StudioPress-Genesis Agent Press theme is an excellent fit with several defaults already optimized for real estate. The re-design included a simplified graphic logo,
and print collateral, but not reflected in the screen snap above. (The site is no longer active, as the client has changed career direction.)
Client: WeNeedEachOther.net – Rapid deployment needed and accomplished in less than a day using WordPress and a minor amount of customization. IDS provided subsequent assistance with a DadaMail email bulletin setup, contact list importing and mentoring.
Client: TarksMarket.com – Rapid deployment of a StudioPress theme (WordPress architecture) for a local grocery store; site utilizes a dynamic slide show on the home page. (This successful grocery store was purchased in 2012 by a larger chain, so the original website URL now forwards to the new chain.)
Client: ReadingWizardCard.com – Logo design (Adobe Illustrator) and extremely quick website (1 page) using existing video clip for an innovative learning aid (reader card)
Early sites (non-WordPress); partial portfolio
Client: Dendera Parners – This elegant site was one of the last ‘hand-crafted’ sites we did before migrating all of our sites to the vastly more versatile and easily extensible WordPress architecture with StudioPress (Genesis Design Framework) themes. Note the subtle Egyptian theme in the background imagery featuring the classic Dendera zodiac; we visited Egypt in 1992, so we just happened to have a wealth of photography and imagery to happily accommodate this clients request for that ‘flavor’ in the design. 🙂

Client: CreativeWritingClasses.us – Donna Hanelin desired the bright colors of Oaxaca, Mexico, where she gives writing retreats, reflected in her site. Designed 2004 by Nancy using Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
Client: TurtleExpedition.com – (Site is active, but has changed designers.) Client desired earth tones and a reflection of their world travels using maps, photos and their animated turtle logo. This site home page included a slide show of many of their photographs.Designed 2003 by Nancy using Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
Client: edu-toys.com – (Site is inactive.) The client wanted a fun site that would be enjoyed by adults and children alike. We created an animated “O” in their edu-toys logo. Original design by Nancy – about 2001
Client: GardenForum.com – (now moplants.com; designer has changed.) Maureen Gilmer desired a website reflecting her love of gardens, bright spring colors and an ease of navigation to all her extras! This original design by Nancy Pre-2000 has since been redesigned. Maureen now has her own television show!
Client: HipPocketPress.com – (Designer has now changed.) The Entrekins desired a simple design and reflecting the California countryside. This is another original Nancy design back in the beginning of web site design – pre 1999.
